WCMC’s Go Green Team Gives to Humane Society As part of White County Medical Center’sinitiative to Go Green, the WCMC Green Team found an inventive way to repurposeitems previously tossed in the trash. Green Team member and surgical nurseAmber Harrison noticed how many blue, disposable pads were being thrown away ona weekly basis and thought they could be used another way. Then, a trip to theWhite County Humane Society gave her a great idea. “We were trying to think of ways todecrease the amount of waste that goes to the landfill,” she said. “These bluepads come in boxes to protect surgical instruments, then, they are just thrownaway. Recycling is not just about recycling paper and plastic, it’s also aboutreducing waste for the hospital. Plus, we are reusing these items for a greatpurpose.” Every few weeks, Harrison makes a trip tothe White County Humane Society to deliver huge sacks of the blue pads. Thepads are then used in each animal’s cage. According to the Humane Society Weekend/WednesdaySupervisor Katrina Dimitry, the Humane Society is at maximum capacity and doinglaundry takes time and money. “The blue, disposable pads are wonderfuland help us tremendously, because it saves us from using hot water and soap,” Dimitrysaid. “It also saves time spent doing laundry so we can give more attention tothe animals. The pads are absorbent and fold easily, so we can put them in anysize cage for the dogs and cats. We are so thankful that WCMC had the idea todo this for us!” With more than 1450 associates, WhiteCounty Medical Center is the second-largest employer in Searcy.
