Local Harpist Plays at WCMC

The White County Medical Center Arts in the Hospital program recently welcomed harpist Ellen Jordan, of Searcy. Several patients, guests, associates and volunteers gathered in the main lobby to hear her play as she carefully plucked each note on her handmade harp.

Jordan originally became interested in learning to play the harp 15 years ago when she visited the Grand Ole Opry Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. Upon returning home from the trip, she and her husband found a walnut tree to craft the handmade harp she still plays; she has two other handmade harps at home. “I was so fascinated by the harpist that I wanted to learn how to play,” she said. “My first couple lessons, nearly 15 years ago, were from a gentleman who played in the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Now, I take lessons from a lady in California via Skype.”

WCMC’s Arts in the Hospital program was developed to promote the healing process of patients. The program invites patients and guests to enjoy a variety of art forms during their hospital stay. Art displays range from elementary school student drawings to professional paintings and photography, as well as musical performances from choirs and bands featuring students of all ages.
